THE ORIGINS OF TAROT

The Tarot was first written about in Italy during the Renaissance, and so it is believed to have been invented at that time. However, although no record has been found before then the symbolism, which includes astrology, ancient Egyptian and the kabbalah tree of life makes it almost certain to be a lot older. There is also a link to India.

It is thought that gypsies may have brought tarot to Europe, their name being a shortened version of Egyptian. The word tarot may be linked with the Egyptian word TARU, which means to require an answer or to consult.

In the Middle Ages the cards were thought of as a negative thing due to the influence of the Church, and so they were changed to the playing cards we see today.

Tarot cards are used today to give an understanding of situations that may be going on in your life, and hopefully how to move forward in a positive way.

There are 78 cards altogether. The major arcana consist of 22 cards, the minor 56 cards. The word ‘arcana’ is taken from the Latin word meaning ‘secret’.

The major arcana are about major events or changes, and are considered to be destiny cards. One of the fears people often have about tarot readings is the Death card, but in fact this card usually signifies a major change, and rarely means physical death.

The minor are made up of four suits, and are about everyday life:
Wands - are linked to careers and work, and fire signs of the zodiac.

Cups - are linked to emotions and feelings, and water signs.

Swords - are linked to thoughts, whether positive or negative, and the air signs.

Pentacles - are linked to money or possessions, and earth signs.

The 22 major cards do not belong to any of the four suits, but are allied to the signs and planets of astrology, as well as the mystical system of kaballah.

Readings are £25, and can take up to 1 hour.
